Historical Middelburg

Middelburg used to be the second most important city in the Netherlands after Amsterdam. And you can see that right away. Stately canal houses in the city awaken our memories of the olden days. When you walk through Middelburg, you can feel the history. Enjoy the narrow streets and alleys along the canals and discover the monuments that Middelburg has to offer.

About the old Sint Jorisdoelen

Originally built in 1582, the Sint Jorisdoelen have long served as the base of the archers' guild of Sint Joris van Zeeland. Slowly but surely, the marksmen's guild turned into a distinguished fraternity and its members gathered primarily to socialize. In 1940, after the bombing of Middelburg, the special building was completely burned out by the city fire. The building was rebuilt in its original style and then served as an office for various companies and organisations. In late 2021, the transformation to Hotel St. Joris began. Ofcourse, the historical elements and features were preserved.

The Town Hall of Middelburg

Middelburg's Town Hall is known as one of the most beautiful medieval town halls in the Netherlands. On April 21, 1452, construction of the Town Hall on the Markt began. Over the course of the century, many changes were made to the Town Hall. Shortly after the city fire on May 17, 1940, work began to rebuild Middelburg. Because of the fire, only a few walls of the Town Hall were left standing. After this, the Municipality of Middelburg used the Town Hall until 2004. Now the Town Hall is Middelburg's number one attraction. Accompanied by a guide, you can see the Town Hall inside. This monumental building is also very popular with photographers.

The Abdij

In the heart of Middelburg, just outside of Hotel St. Joris, lies the 900-year-old Abdij. Four large towers with a square in the middle is a place where people can meet. Besides being home to the provincial government, the abbey now hosts festivals and houses the Zeeuws Museum. From the square you can reach the cloisters: one of the most photogenic spots in Middelburg and definitely worth a visit!

The Damplein

With 35 national monuments, the oldest of which date from the 16th century, the Damplein is a popular spot in Middelburg. One of the notable monuments on the square is the Gistpoort; which actually stands in the Sint Pieterstraat, but is clearly visible from the Damplein. Besides the rich history, you will find unique stores and good restaurants in this area.
