The characteristic village of Westkapelle, also called "Wasschappel", is located behind the kilometer-long sea dike on the westernmost tip of Walcheren. Westkapelle is a village with a historic status. The village originated around the time of the Vikings and the population mainly lived from fishing. At the beginning of the 15th century a storm flood caused a lot of damage, which led to the construction of the Westkapelle Zeedijk shortly afterwards.
